BIG VALLEY INDIAN SCHOOL

(Picture unavailable. Unless someone out there has one ???)

In 1914 the Native Americans of Big Valley had become settled on the Big Valley Rancheria, so the Mission Fathers moved the Mission church building to the rancheria from its former place by the current Lakeside Park in Big Valley. Regular school was taught in this building for several years and then in the 1920s the school was moved to the vacant Big Valley School in Finley. The school was run by Kelseyville Grammar School Trustees, but financed by the U.S. Department of Indian Affairs. About 1930, at the request of the Department of Indian Affairs, the school was closed and the children attended either Kelseyville or Lakeport schools.
